"Scent throw" is simply how far and how strongly a candle's fragrance spreads through a room. It comes in two flavours: cold throw, the fragrance you notice from an unlit candle sitting in the room, and hot throw, how strongly it fills the room once lit and burning. A candle can have a lovely cold throw and a disappointingly weak hot throw, or the other way round β they are genuinely different things, and reviews that only mention one are only telling half the story. Throw is driven mainly by fragrance load (the percentage of fragrance oil in the wax) rather than price, so a modestly priced candle with a higher fragrance load can easily out-throw an expensive one. As a rough guide, expect a well-made candle to noticeably scent an average Australian living area of around 20 square metres within twenty to thirty minutes of lighting, a little longer if the aircon is running and diluting the air.
What is "cold throw"?
The scent you notice from an unlit candle just sitting in the room β a useful thing to check in-store before you buy, since it is a rough (though not perfect) preview of how the candle will smell once lit.
